Anyway, after a bit of fiddling I got it compiled and it plays HES files (as well as other formats). Gonna see if I can use the audio code for the custom PC tracker.

Oh, I now tried to enable cubic interpolation (I didn't notice the option before) and it seems to be significantly better. Thanks Blargg. Ideally I would set the player's sample rate to a multiple of the GBA's sample rate, but I guess the sample rate varies in function the game, and some even varies the sample rate dynamicly in a song, so this is almost impossible. I have noticed that emulators have taken longer to get audio up to par than video as well. On machines that only output composite video, it's partly because composite video is equivalent to phone-quality audio, whereas RCA can be equivalent to between S-Video and RGB quality (significant video noise on audio is due to design quality, not an inherent limitation of RCA audio).

This could be similar to using sinc or cubic interpolation rather than gaussian for SNES audio, which is something I never was able to find out happens with Blargg's audio core (I'm in the middle of trying to find answers right now) - the impression I always got was that it did gaussian because that's what the real SNES did with no way to use ...
